Dokter and Misses

Get to know Dokter and Misses.

Industrial designer Adriaan Hugo and graphic designer Katy Taplin established Dokter and Misses in Johannesburg in 2007. Their different disciplines meet in furniture whose silhouette reads almost like a drawing: a folded edge, a coloured panel or an unexpected proportion becomes its signature. The studio names the city’s architecture, painted signs and contrasts among its influences, alongside African modernism and Basotho geometry. Furniture, lighting and objects are designed and made in Johannesburg with local craftspeople. The collection moves between practical pieces for a room and limited editions represented by Southern Guild. Much of the furniture is made to order, with colour, material or size adjustments discussed directly with the studio. It is an approach that gives an ordinary function—a desk, a cupboard, a lamp—a strong presence in the room.
