699 Superleggera — Black Ash, Woven Seat

Gio Ponti’s 699 Superleggera, manufactured by Cassina since 1957, makes lightness visible through slender legs and a spare, two-rail back. The ash frame uses legs with a triangular cross-section of only 18 mm; the woven-seat design has a minimum weight of 1.7 kg. A denser beech seat frame supports the load, joining machine-shaped wood to hand-finishing and seat weaving. In black ash with a pale woven seat, the chair offers a crisp contrast around a dining table. Cassina offers other finishes and upholstered seats, which should be configured separately; this selection concerns the photographed black woven-seat version.
