Vaarnii begins with a local material rather than a neutral surface. The house works with Finnish pine and Finnish makers, treating the wood’s lively grain as an active part of the object. Fredrik Paulsen’s 001 Dining Chair gives that material broad planes and assertive proportions. The black-stained version keeps the grain visible through a deep colour, so the chair remains a wooden object rather than a uniform black shape.
