How to choose a portable table lamp for your home

Compare footprint, light direction and charging habits to find a small lamp with a clear place in your home, with HAY and Ambientec to discover.

Give the lamp one starting place

Before comparing colours, name the place where you expect to use the lamp most often: a dining table, a bedside shelf or a side table near an armchair. Then describe what you want to see there. Is the lamp part of the atmosphere, or do you want light on a particular surface? A portable object can move, but choosing a first role makes the shortlist more useful than imagining every possible room at once.

Check the footprint before the silhouette

Use the listed base diameter and overall height to make a paper footprint and a simple height marker. Place them beside the objects that normally live on the table. Leave room for a glass, a book or the movement of a drawer. Look from your usual seated position as well as from the doorway. A shape that looks small in a product photograph may occupy more of a narrow shelf than you expect.

Observe where the light goes

Look for a demonstration that shows the lamp switched on in a room, not only against a blank background. Notice what the shade reveals, what it hides and which part of the tabletop is lit. If you can see it in person, compare its settings from the position where you would use it. A mood photograph is a starting point for questions; it is not a measurement of the light you will have at home.

Include charging in the everyday picture

Decide where the lamp will return to charge and where its cable or base will sit. Compare the stated running time at the brightness setting you would actually choose, and check what is included with the exact version sold in your region. An indoor or outdoor use claim belongs to the specific product and its instructions; do not extend it automatically to a charging accessory. Keep the practical information with your shortlist instead of relying on memory.

Two design approaches to explore

HAY presents the PC Portable Lamp by Pierre Charpin with a dimmable light source. Ambientec identifies Nao Tamura as the designer of Turn and lists four dimming levels. These give you two names to explore through form and controls, without turning a list of specifications into a ranking. Open their Selezio profiles to discover the brands, then compare the exact versions that interest you. This guide does not report a comparative product test.

Choose an object you also like switched off

Finish by looking at the lamp in daylight beside your existing materials. Does its colour connect with the chair, the table or another small object? Keep a short selection in My Selezio with a note about the place, the light direction and the charging arrangement. A clear everyday role leaves room for the pleasure of choosing a shape. You may discover that one carefully placed lamp is the addition you were looking for.
