THE BRAND’S POINT OF VIEW

Get to know Mabeo Studio.

Mabeo began by making furniture for commercial projects in Botswana. Peter Mabeo gradually opened that work to a wider dialogue between local artisans and designers, building a studio around the possibilities of making together. DWR’s account dates its founding to 1997 and places its workshop in Gaborone. The studio’s own history describes collaborations with Patricia Urquiola, Patty Johnson, Vincent Van Duysen, Ines Bressand and Claesson Koivisto Rune. Wood, craft knowledge and a contemporary vocabulary meet without reducing the furniture to a decorative motif. The Lesire collection makes that exchange tangible: a repeated scalloped detail, drawn from embroidered textiles found around the studio, is translated into carved hardwood. Made in Botswana and developed for Design Within Reach, the collection connects an artisanal workshop with an international retail network.

Lesire Coffee Table — Panga Panga →

Mabeo Studio’s Lesire Coffee Table pairs an oval panga panga hardwood top with outward-angled triangular legs. Peter Mabeo designed it in 2024 for Design Within Reach. A hand-carved scalloped edge gives the dark, visibly grained wood a textile-like rhythm. Made in Botswana, the table is approximately 120 cm along its long axis, 60 cm across and 40 cm high. It requires assembly. Natural variations in grain and colour mean the delivered wood will differ from the photograph. The low, elongated shape works beside a sofa, leaving the scalloped perimeter visible.
