Where is Autry from? American roots, an Italian revival and two retro styles
Autry connects American tennis heritage with an Italian revival. Explore its story and the different silhouettes of Medalist and Reelwind.

American sporting roots, a new Italian chapter
Autry’s American identity comes from the tennis footwear designed by Jim Autry in the 1980s. The brand’s official history describes a quieter period in the late 1990s, followed by a revival in 2019 led by four Italian entrepreneurs. Its current company information names Autry International S.p.A. in Milan. These are different chapters of the same story: the sporting heritage explains the retro references, while the Italian revival explains the contemporary fashion direction. Neither the flag nor the company address establishes where a particular pair was manufactured.
Medalist: the court-shoe outline
The white-leather Medalist Low makes the tennis connection easy to read. Its official description lists a perforated toe, padded collar and rubber sole. On a restrained colourway, the arrangement of panels and stitching becomes the main visual detail. For an everyday wardrobe, look at how the fuller shape sits beneath straight trousers or beside a bare ankle. That is a question of proportion and personal taste, rather than evidence that one shoe will be more comfortable for everyone.
Reelwind: a running-inspired line
Reelwind takes a different route through retro sportswear. The black version documented by Autry combines nylon and suede with white leather accents, a slim profile and a raised-tread sole. Compared with Medalist’s court-shoe outline, the contrast comes from the mixed textures and narrower-looking line. Running inspiration describes the design language here; it is not a recommendation to use a lifestyle sneaker as technical running equipment. Compare the exact version, since colours, finishes and material combinations vary.
Choose the shape, then check the pair
Start with the outline you want to wear: a panelled court shoe or a slimmer, mixed-material silhouette. Then check the specific model’s size guide, lining and care instructions. If manufacturing origin matters to you, read the label of that pair rather than drawing a conclusion from the brand’s American imagery or Italian address.
