How to choose a belt: width, fit and buckle

Start with the clothes you wear, then compare proportions and sizing. A practical belt guide with A.P.C. to discover.

Start with the waistband you actually wear

Choose a pair of trousers or a dress before choosing the belt. Where will the belt sit, and does it need to pass through loops? A belt worn at the natural waist may need a different length from one worn lower on jeans. Measure around the place where you intend to wear it, over the clothing if appropriate. When trying it on, sit down as well as stand up: the fastening should feel comfortable in both positions. A familiar trouser size is a starting point, not a substitute for the exact belt’s size guide.

Check width against loops and proportions

Measure the usable opening of the belt loops and leave enough room to thread the strap without forcing it. Then look at the belt with the whole outfit, including the part of the shirt that will cover or frame it. Width changes the emphasis at the waist even when the colour stays the same. For a concrete comparison, A.P.C.’s black Rosette page specifies a 2 cm strap, while its black Paris reference specifies 3 cm. These are measurements for those exact references, not standard widths for every belt carrying those names.

Read the length convention before ordering

A total end-to-end length and a fastening length describe different things. Before comparing a belt you own with a new one, check the measuring points in the brand’s guide. Ask for clarification if the page gives a size number without a diagram or explanation. Once fastened, check where the tip ends and whether the keeper holds it neatly. Do not assume that a strap can be shortened or given extra holes: ask about the construction and alteration policy before making an irreversible change.

Choose the buckle you will enjoy wearing

The buckle is often the most visible detail. On the checked A.P.C. references, Rosette pairs smooth black leather with a gold-tone buckle and one keeper; Paris pairs grained black leather with a silver-tone buckle and two keepers. Think about how much of that hardware you want to show rather than treating a metal colour as a rule for every outfit. Check the buckle’s bulk beneath a shirt and try the fastening yourself.
