How to use and store a shampoo bar at home and away
From lathering in your hands to packing a dry bar, a practical introduction to the solid format with Davines to discover.

Choose a shampoo, not just a solid shape
A bar-shaped product is not enough to tell you what it is for. Check that the exact item is a shampoo and read its intended use, ingredients and directions. A conditioner bar and a hand soap can look similar while asking for different routines. Keep the product name with its container, especially when several plain bars share a bathroom. Before buying a case, note the dimensions of the bar rather than assuming that every travel tin will fit.
Follow the lathering method for your bar
Davines instructs users of DEDE Solid Shampoo to wet the bar, rub it between the palms to create lather and apply that lather to wet hair, then rinse thoroughly. Its separate guide also recommends working the product in the hands rather than rubbing the bar directly on the scalp. Treat these as directions for the Davines example, not a universal method for every solid formula. Read your own label and keep any conditioner step appropriate to that product and your routine.
Separate drying from storage
The useful distinction is between a place to dry the bar and a case to carry it. Davines advises rinsing its bar after use, leaving it exposed to air on a holder until completely dry, and only then placing it in a protective case. At home, give the holder a place away from the direct shower spray and check that the bar is not sitting in pooled water. Look at the underside of a dish as well as its surface when choosing where it will stand.
Plan the last wash before packing
For a trip, think about the time between your last wash and closing your bag. If it is very short, decide in advance how you will handle a bar that has not finished drying, following the manufacturer’s storage advice. Check that the case closes around the exact bar without crushing it, and clean and dry the case before putting it away. Explore Davines on Selezio and save the formula you want to revisit. The format is one part of the choice; the instructions and the place you give it matter too.
